Services
What do I do?
I’m passionate about helping other writers bring life to their vision for the stories burning inside them. Through my editing and coaching services, I’ll help you bring your story’s heart to its center, craft a satisfying and engaging experience that will capture readers from page one, make your unique voice and perspective shine, and more deeply explore the meaning that makes your tale worth sharing.
Who do I work with?
I love to work with writers who are passionate about their craft and want to write enduring stories with an impact that lasts beyond “The End.” People who are committed to telling honest stories that challenge readers to think about what they believe, that portray truth and goodness as beautiful and desirable, and that point to hope even through darkness and tragedy. (see Mission and Values)
I especially love to support writers seeking independent publication, and I want to mentor young people who are serious about learning the ropes of fiction. Investing in editing and professional instruction can be costly, especially if you’re an indie author already footing the bill for the entire publication process or a student with a part-time job. My rates are purposefully more affordable than standard to ensure my services are accessible to you.
What kinds of manuscripts do I edit?
I work with fiction—literary, popular, and everything in between. I’m most familiar with the genres of historical fiction, fantasy, and science fiction, but I’m more than willing to explore. There’s a special place in my heart for genre mashups—I don’t believe that genre and marketing expectations should limit your creativity, and I’m always on the lookout for the innovative and unexpected.
What I won’t edit:
You’re welcome to try to convince me to edit your romance novel, but in most cases we’ll probably both be happier if you seek out the services of someone who specializes in the genre. I also prefer to avoid horror (I don’t get enough sleep as it is.) I will not edit erotica under any circumstances, and I reserve the right to turn down a job if a manuscript contains elements that fall under the label of “gratuitousness.” (e.g., explicit sex, offensive language, extreme violence)
I’m a Silver Member of the Christian Proofreaders and Editors Network, and my professional education has included editing courses offered through the PEN Institute. My non-professional education has included the work of writing craft instructors such as K.M. Weiland, C.S. Lakin, and James Scott Bell. I also occasionally read books about punctuation for fun.
