Line Editing

A line edit polishes your prose to enhance the reader’s enjoyment of your art and make sure your communication is successful. The goal is to smooth out any snags that might jolt the reader out of the flow of the story, express the experience in your head clearly on the page, and delight the reader by presenting your thoughts in a fresh, engaging manner. I strive to preserve your authentic voice while working with you to focus your personal style and strengthen its best qualities. I make sure to explain every change and suggestion to help you develop your writing skills through the process.

Concerns addressed in a line edit:

  • Consistency of character voice
  • Stilted or on-the-nose dialogue
  • Showing vs. telling
  • Point-of-view errors
  • Readability & clarity of communication
  • Vibrancy of descriptions & imagery
  • Overwriting & underwriting
  • Unnecessary repetition
  • Relevance & consistency of details
  • Pacing
  • Consistent & appropriate tone
  • Appropriate word choice
  • Momentum (micro-level tension & anticipation that keeps the reader turning pages)
  • Effectively conveying emotion

You’ll receive:

  • Revisions made directly to the manuscript using Track Changes in Microsoft Word
  • Suggestions for revision where more subjective decisions are involved
  • Explanation of the reasons behind every change I make or recommend
  • Overview of strongest writing skills and frequent errors
