Coaching
“Why do I need a coach to tell me how to write when I can read helpful articles for free?” you might wonder.
With so much expert information available, it’s easier than ever to absorb the knowledge of your craft. But when pencil comes to paper, knowing what to do is often easier than actually doing it. The purpose of a writing coach is to help you turn your knowledge into skill. A good instructor will teach you how to think, but a good coach will join you in the trenches and train you to put your thoughts into action.
As your writing coach, I can help you identify writing skills that need practice, figure out what the next steps in your writing process should be, and brainstorm solutions to storytelling roadblocks. Whether you’re looking for regular accountability and feedback or just need fresh eyes on a particular story issue, you’ll get constructive advice and encouragement, guided practice to take control of your craft, and focused instruction on honing specific skills.
The coaching agenda is defined by the skills you’re interested in working on and the type of story you want to tell. Clients can work with me to complete a short fiction piece or a novel outline. (If you would like coaching through the process of revising a full novel manuscript, I typically ask that you start with a Basic Evaluation.) You have the option of working through the planning process from scratch, or you can submit a previously written draft and develop your skills through the revision process.
Each coaching session includes:
- 45 minute video or phone call
- Practical instruction on how you can develop and improve your manuscript and build specific writing and storytelling skills
- Personally tailored questions and assignments designed to help you think through the next steps of your storytelling process and practice your writing and brainstorming skills.
